Statement pieces

High contrast, strong colour or unusual scale — usually two of the three. The 41 works in this edit are the ones capable of carrying a wall without help, which is a different job from being the best picture in the gallery.

A statement piece is what a room gets arranged around. You choose it first and then decide where the sofa goes, rather than looking for something to fill the gap above a sofa that is already there.

The most common mistake with work like this is grouping it. A statement piece flanked by two smaller prints is not a gallery wall — it is one picture with two distractions, and all three lose. Leave clear wall on either side, more than feels necessary.

The second most common mistake is buying two. Two focal points in one room means neither is a focal point; the eye ping-pongs and settles nowhere. If you want a second bold piece, put it in a different room or on a wall you cannot see from the first.

Above furniture, span roughly two-thirds of the width of the piece below — a 2-metre sofa wants about 130 cm of art. On an empty wall, the print should read as deliberate from the doorway, which in practice means larger than most people first choose. Sizes in this edit run 60×40 cm.

If the largest sheet available is still smaller than the wall wants, a wide mat and a substantial frame will add 15–20 cm in each direction for far less than the next size up, priced €195–€295.

Check the piece from the far side of the room before you commit to a position, not from arm's length. A statement print is designed to be read at distance, and the placement that looks balanced while you are holding it against the wall is usually 10 to 15 cm off once you step back.
